Best Tonneau Covers for Ford F150: Reviews & Recommendations

Best Roll-Up Tonneau Cover – TruXedo TruXport

Brand: TruXedo
Finish: Leather grain
Material: Vinyl
Warranty: 5-year
Weight capacity: N/A
Type: Soft roll-up cover
Price: Check Price

The TruXedo TruXport ticks most boxes when it comes to quality soft tonneau covers. This roll-up truck bed cover is made from leather grain vinyl, which gives it an appealing aesthetic. More importantly, the TruXport cover installs easily without requiring specialty equipment or truck bed adjustments, such as drilling. It latches snuggly to the side rails thanks to its heavy-duty hook and loop system and provides full access to the truck bed.

Like every product out there, the TruXedo TruXport has some drawbacks. It sits on top of bed rails which makes it harder to align, and it blocks the stake pocket holes because of it. Despite a pretty straightforward installation, some buyers have still had difficulties with it. Failing to heed the instructions could result in an improper seal and impact the cover’s performance.

Best Soft Folding Tonneau Cover – Tyger Auto T3

Brand: Tyger Auto
Finish: Dual-coated
Material: Vinyl
Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty (US only)
Weight capacity: 100 lbs
Type: Soft tri-fold cover
Price: Check Price

The Tyger Auto T3 soft tri-fold tonneau cover is one of the most user-friendly truck bed covers on the market. Aside from being simple to install, it’s arguably the simplest one to use. It consists of three connected panels and only requires two moves of an arm to fold. The cover itself is made of marine-grade vinyl, while the rails are aluminum.

Being a tri-fold cover, the Tyger Auto T3 always leaves one-third of the bed covered and inaccessible from the top, which is unfortunate. As with most soft tonneau covers, finding the perfect fit can be tricky. Several reviewers have noticed that the cover tends to flap at high speeds and in strong winds. It’s also incompatible with stake pocket holes since it sits on top of them.

Best Hard Folding Tonneau Cover – BAK BAKFlip MX4

Brand: BAK
Finish: Matte
Material: Aluminum
Warranty: 5-year
Weight capacity: 400 lbs
Type: Hard folding cover
Price: Check Price

The BAK BAKFlip MX4 is a step up compared to soft covers as it’s made of aluminum and can withstand up to 400 lbs of evenly distributed weight. It’s also a step up in terms of pricing, but then again, all hard tonneau covers are. Although it consists of four folding panels, the BAKFlip MX4 provides full access to the bed since it can fold in an upright position next to the cab.

The company states that the cover doesn’t impede the cab-mounted third brake light when folded up, which is true. However, they fail to mention that it does obstruct the bed camera if the truck comes equipped with one. Many customers have also found the opening cable latch system to be of subpar quality. Overall, BAK’s quality control seems to be inconsistent, but the company stands behind its product with replacement parts.

Best Retractable Tonneau Cover – GatorTrax

Brand: GatorTrax
Finish: Matte
Material: Aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate
Warranty: 1-year
Weight capacity: 175 lbs
Type: Hard sliding cover
Price: Check Price

The GatorTrax truck bed cover is a premium option, constructed from polycarbonate and reinforced with aluminum beams every four inches. It’s easy to install and provides a tight seal. It slides up and down the side rails and can be locked half-open in any position you want. We’ve found that the GatorTrax tonneau cover does a great job protecting the cargo from the elements.

The downside of going for the GatorTrax cover is that you don’t get as high weight capacity as you would with a different type of hard cover. Also, its one-year warranty doesn’t instill a lot of confidence – especially for such an expensive product. Some customers have also expressed discontent with the cover’s longevity since, according to them, it tends to start cracking a few years into the ownership.

Best One-Piece Tonneau Cover – UnderCover Elite LX

Brand: UnderCover
Finish: Factory-matching color
Material: ABS composite
Warranty: 1-year on parts and lifetime on paint and structure
Weight capacity: 500 lbs
Type: Hard one-piece cover
Price: Check Price

The UnderCover Elite LX is a premium product for all those in need of a seamless, one-piece tonneau cover with a touch of luxury. The cover itself is constructed from durable ABS composite material and matches the manufacturers’ color specifications, while the inside of the cover is lined with carpeted material and features a removable LED light at the rear. It’s simple to install and doesn’t require any drilling.

The downsides of UnderCover’s Elite LX tonneau cover – aside from the premium price tag – are its weight, thickness, and positioning atop the truck bed sides and over the stake pocket holes. Since it opens up under an angle, like the hood, you never have full access to the entire bed. It does come with a cargo retriever tool, though.

Best Hard Roll-up Tonneau Cover – BAK Revolver X4s

Brand: BAK
Finish: Matte
Material: Industrial-grade vinyl
Warranty: 5-year
Weight capacity: 400 lbs
Type: Hard roll-up cover
Price: Check Price

The BAK Revolver X4s is a hard roll-up cover that offers a combination of practicality and ease of access of a roll-up cover and structural rigidity of a hard cover. It’s easy to install and doesn’t impede the stake pocket holes and other accessories. Although its top is covered in vinyl, the BAK Revolver X4s features an aluminum underbody that gives it higher durability.

This premium hard roll-up seems to be covering all the angles. It does just about everything right, without too many major downsides. However, several customers have complained about receiving a defective product from the manufacturer. At the same time, a number of them have complained about the Revolver X4s’ subpar quality.

Best Heavy Duty Tonneau Cover – DIAMONDBACK HD

Finish: Diamond-plate
Material: Heavy-duty aluminum
Warranty: 3 years on the finish and limited lifetime on structure
Weight capacity: 1,600 lbs
Type: Hard heavy-duty cover
Price: Check Price

As its name suggests, the DIAMONDBACK HD is arguably the most structurally sound tonneau cover among the ones we’ve tested. It’s designed with a heavy-duty workload in mind and is capable of withstanding as much as 1,600 pounds of weight. It’s also resistant to dents and scratches thanks to its heavy-duty aluminum structure with rigid diamond-plate pattern and quality coating. Meanwhile, a neoprene perimeter gasket keeps the elements out of the truck bed, while a two-key lock system does the same with potential burglars.

One of the DIAMONDBACK HD tonneau cover’s biggest disadvantages is its middle segment which remains fixed at all times. The cover opens at an angle from both sides of it but never allows for full bed access. It also covers the stake pocket holes.

Our Verdict

Our pick for the best tonneau cover for Ford F-150 would be the BAK BAKFlip MX4. It’s structurally sound, supports all bed configurations, and features a convenient folding design. If you’re looking for something more affordable, however, you can’t go wrong with the TruXedo TruXport truck bed cover, which can do almost everything its more pricey counterparts can.

How to Choose the Best Tonneau Cover for Ford F150

Tonneau covers are fairly simple in both their function and installation – at least most of them are. However, as it’s the case with any product, there are a few important things to consider before making a decision, and it’s not only about the price. Here’s everything you need to know about truck bed covers to help you make an informed decision.

Types of tonneau covers

The simplest classification of tonneau covers would be to soft and hard covers. Furthermore, they can also be divided by their mechanism to roll up, folding, retractable, and lift-opening covers and most of them can be made of both soft and hard materials.

Soft tonneau covers

Soft truck bed covers are made from lightweight, soft materials, typically vinyl or similar hard fabrics. They’re usually the best value options and provide a mix of protection and flexibility. However, they won’t be able to support a lot of weight, and they’re relatively easy to destroy by someone determined to access the bed by force.

Hard tonneau covers

As their name suggests, hard tonneau covers are constructed from sturdy materials and provide the best protection. They’re typically heavier, bulkier, and more expensive than their soft counterparts, but they can also withstand more punishment. Aside from being expensive, their main drawbacks are typically restricted access to the truck bed or a complex installation process.

Roll-up tonneau covers

Roll-up tonneau covers are typically soft, although they can also be made from sturdier materials. They roll up and down the rails and provide full access to the bed, making them one of the most practical truck bed cover solutions. One of their main drawbacks is that it takes a bit more time to fully roll them. Although it usually measures in mere seconds, the time adds up.

Folding tonneau covers

Folding truck bed covers typically consist of three to four larger panels that fold on top of each other. They’re easy to use and come in many different variations, including soft and hard. Some of them don’t provide full access to the bed, while others feature a mechanism to flip them against the rear of the cab.

Retractable tonneau covers

Retractable truck bed covers are usually thin and low-profile so that they could easily retract into the tonneau cover canister by using a manual or automatic mechanism. They’re convenient as they typically allow the cover to be locked in any position between fully open and fully closed. However, the mechanism can be fragile and typically gets outlasted by the cover itself. Also, the canister takes up a bit of space in the truck bed.

Lift-opening tonneau covers

Lift-opening tonneau covers open up like hoods atop the engine bay compartments. They can open from either side of the truck bed or both sides at the same time and are usually held in place by automated or manually set supports. Although they tend to be securely shut when closed, they also rarely offer full access to the bed when open.

Tonneau cover features to look out for

Aside from different types, there are also important features to consider when deciding on the perfect tonneau cover.

It’s not only a personal preference that’s in play when picking a tonneau cover material. Whether you choose a rigid hard cover produced from aluminum or polycarbonate or a flexible soft cover made from vinyl or similar hard fabric, a tonneau cover is supposed to last. The best truck bed covers should withstand the impact of the elements, UV rays, dirt and rocks, and even heavy cargo. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a tonneau cover that checks all the boxes, so it’s important to narrow down the choices according to your needs.

Bed access

Ease of bed access differs depending on chosen tonneau cover style. While roll-up and retracting (and folding, to some extent) covers typically allow full access to the truck’s bed, lift-opening tonneau covers impose certain restrictions in that regard. If full bed access within seconds is important to you, always check whether the tonneau cover on your shortlist offers that convenience.

Hard tonneau covers, naturally, offer better security for your cargo than their softer counterparts. The latter are susceptible to burglaries, as thieves can easily cut through them and reach your precious cargo. Furthermore, hard covers often feature a dedicated locking mechanism that works independently of the truck’s tailgate.

Weather protection

As far as weather protection goes, softer covers can hold their own in most cases but are known to fail due to heavy snow and ice accumulation. Meanwhile, both hard and soft covers tend to do a better job if they sit atop the truck bed sides, even though they block the stake pocket holes in this instance. Tonneau covers that don’t sit above the bed sides typically use weather stripping to seal the sides and corners from the elements. No cover is waterproof, read about it in our article.

Although not technically a feature, the price often plays a major role when choosing the right tonneau cover for your F-150. Budget options typically go for anything between $200 and $350, while premium hard covers are rarely available for less than $1,000. Granted, there are tonneau covers available for anything in between those ranges, but more affordable options will typically do just fine for fraction of the price.

How hard is it to install a tonneau cover?

A tonneau cover is typically easy to install and shouldn’t take more than half an hour to get set up. Most also don’t require any drilling of the truck bed or the use of specialty equipment. Some hard covers, however, might require a bit more elbow grease.

Do tonneau covers keep water out?

Most tonneau covers are made with protection from the elements like water in mind. Not all of them, however, are equally successful. In short, tonneau covers do keep the water out, as most are waterproof. You need to make sure you’re buying a reputable product that guarantees protection from water.

What is better – a soft or hard tonneau cover?

That depends on your preference and requirements. Soft covers are cheaper and tend to be more practical. Hard covers, on the other hand, offer more security, better protection, and higher weight capacity.

Does tonneau cover help gas mileage?

Yes, tonneau covers will help increase fuel economy, but don’t expect any miracles. On average, they reduce drag by around 6%, which translates to almost 2% in fuel savings. Bear in mind that heavy tonneau covers add a significant amount of weight to your truck, which could hurt your mpg.

How much weight can a tonneau cover hold?

Every tonneau cover has a carrying weight specification. Typically, soft covers can take up to 100 pounds of weight, but it’s not recommended to load them with cargo unless you’re willing to risk damaging them. Hard covers can carry several hundred pounds of weight, with heavy-duty covers surpassing the 1,000 lbs mark.
